Job Description

The Chair of the TBIC reports to the Associate Vice President for Data Science and Informatics. He or she will provide expertise in the storage, analysis and application of human genomic and other ‘omic data, as well as linkage of clinical and population-based data with genetics/genomics data in a way that will advance the practice of personalized medicine. The Center associated with the Chair will be a division of the Biomedical Informatics Center at MUSC, a resource funded by the Office of the Provost and the College of Medicine. The TBIC will help integrate MUSC’s clinical data assets with genomic and other ‘omic data to achieve a progressive vision of 21st    century medicine that is personalized, preventative, predictable and participatory (P4 Medicine), and also addresses critical health disparities.

The TBIC will also play an important role in MUSC’s Clinical and Translational Sciences research program and help design and direct the creation of cloud-based and onsite high performance computing assets required for integration of genomics data.

The TIBC should have a deep understanding of artificial intelligence methods and how those methods enhance analyses of ‘omic data. He or she will help develop advanced AI resources to support the needs of MUSC investigators in synthesis across electronic health record, imagining, and sequencing data systems, as well as tools for refinement of large language models for research and clinical decision support.

The TBIC will also work with clinical leaders at MUSC to enhance our learning health system applying precision medicine and precision population health to MUSC Health’s growing statewide presence. MUSC has 16 hospitals across the state linked by a common electronic medical records system (Epic). Working with BMIC’s Epic Research Team and its Research Data Warehouse team, the TBIC will help create novel applications to apply precision medicine principles at the bedside.

In addition, through collaborations with Associate Vice President for Data Science and Informatics and the Vice President for Research, the TBIC will act as the catalyst and organizing mechanism for all genomic data-driven extramural and interprofessional research activities across the MUSC campus. In this capacity TBIC will coordinate new genomic data assets with the other considerable research resources flowing through the academic department of the School of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Health Professions so that they act in synergy to advance translation and translational science.

Applicants for this position should have a national reputation as a leader in translational biomedical informatics as well as a strong track record of publications and external funding in translational informatics. Applicants should be eligible for appointment at the Professor or Associate Professor level.
