Job Description Summary

The Burn Behavioral Health (BBH) Program is seeking a part time Program Assistant to work within the South Carolina Burn Center, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Department of Surgery at MUSC. The BBH serves patients who require hospitalization after presenting to acute care medical emergency department and burn center settings for the treatment of burn injuries. The Program Assistant would provide program support in clinical, administrative, and quality improvement/research efforts being conducted. The services are provided in a stepped-care format spanning inpatient to outpatient continuum. The employee will support day-to-day program operations, conduct patient screenings, scheduling, and referrals, and assist with the management of a clinical database. The employee will be responsible for initial orientation and onboarding trainings of program trainees and volunteers. The employee will assist the program director with program implementation efforts, as needed.

Job Description

FLSA Type: Hourly

Schedule: 10 hours per week, Hours and Days TBD Upon Hire

Job Duties:

• 35% - Assist with clinical operations of the BBH program, including: identifying and registering eligible burn patients upon admission to the burn center or following a referral from the burn team; conducting brief in-person or telephone mental health screenings 1-month post-injury; managing patient correspondence via secure email and letters; tracking and scheduling/rescheduling patients for initial and follow-up visits following a positive screen; providing referrals to other mental health services for patients who experience other mental health conditions that are not addressed by BBH.
• 35% - Assist with BBH program implementation, including day-to-day clinic operations, data collection, and quality improvement efforts. Maintain active communication with leadership and other key personnel regarding implementation activities and create monthly progress reports.
• 3 30% - Trainees and volunteers are an essential part of the BBH program. Trainees assist with clinical operations, multidisciplinary collaboration, and program development activities. Provide onboarding, orientation, and training of BBH trainees and volunteers. Oversee trainee activities and completion of tasks. Send progress reports to supervisors, as needed.

Preferred Requirements:

• A bachelor's degree in psychology, sociology, public health or related field.
• This may be substituted for the required program experience.
• At least 1 year experience providing program assistance working with individuals affected by burns and traumatic life events.
• Prior internship with the program is preferred.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Experience working with trauma/burn patients, effective patient communication skills
• Significant experience working with multidisciplinary teams
• Development of patient/caregiver materials
• Program development activities
• Coordination of trainings, educational sessions, and outreach events
• Experience tracking program/research activities, program reporting
• Familiarity with EMR and experience with medical documentation
• Detail oriented, strong written and oral communication skills, strong work ethic      

Guidelines and Supervision: Clinical/Administration/Program Development: Employee will receive active, ongoing mentorship and supervision from the Program Director. Employee will have regular correspondence with the burn team and will have the option to attend weekly multidisciplinary burn rounds to discuss patients’ status, as needed.

Work Environment: It is likely that the employee will occupy a designated workstation that is located in an office area shared by several employees. Employee will likely work remotely and in the burn clinic/at the hospital when not in the office.

Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and two years relevant program experience. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required program experience.
