Job Description Summary

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Department of Neurology seeks a qualified part-time Neurohospitalist to provide inpatient neurological care on a temporary, at-will basis. This position supports the Neurohospitalist Program by delivering high-quality, evidence-based care to hospitalized patients with acute and complex neurological conditions.
The incumbent will provide clinical services on a per-shift basis, working collaboratively with an interdisciplinary care team to ensure continuity, efficiency, and excellence in patient care. This is a non-tenure track, temporary clinical role with no guarantee of minimum shifts or long-term employment.

Employment Status

  • Appointment Type: Temporary / At-Will
  • Work Schedule: Part-time; scheduled on an as-needed basis
  • Compensation: Paid per Neurohospitalist shift (rate determined by MUSC compensation guidelines)
  • Benefits Eligibility: Not benefits-eligible unless otherwise specified under MUSC temporary employment policies

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide inpatient neurological consultation and management for hospitalized patients
  • Evaluate, diagnose, and treat a broad spectrum of neurologic conditions
  • Collaborate with hospitalists, intensivists, and other specialists to coordinate care
  • Participate in inpatient rounding schedules, including weekday and weekend shifts as assigned
  • Ensure appropriate documentation in the electronic medical record in accordance with MUSC standards
  • Facilitate safe and effective transitions of care, including discharge planning and outpatient follow-up recommendations
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and care teams

 

Program Participation

  • Support the goals of the MUSC Neurohospitalist Program, including quality, safety, and efficiency initiatives
  • May participate in teaching activities with medical students and residents as needed during assigned shifts
  • Refer patients to appropriate neurology subspecialty services (e.g., stroke, epilepsy, movement disorders, neuromuscular, cognitive neurology) for ongoing care

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited institution
  • Board certification or board eligibility in Neurology
  • Eligibility for medical licensure in the State of South Carolina
  • Demonstrated clinical competence in inpatient neurology care

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a Neurohospitalist or inpatient neurology setting
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Commitment to collaborative, team-based care

 

Work Environment

The MUSC Medical Center is a high-volume, tertiary referral center providing advanced neurological care supported by multidisciplinary specialty services, state-of-the-art technology, and comprehensive clinical resources.

 

Additional Information

This position is classified as temporary and at-will, meaning employment may be terminated by either the employee or MUSC at any time, with or without cause, in accordance with institutional policies. Scheduling is dependent on departmental needs and physician availability.
