Job Description Summary

The Medical University of South Carolina, Department of Clinical Sciences invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, non-tenured open-rank faculty to serve as Program Director of the residential Physician Assistant Studies (PAS-R) program. Candidates for Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor, must have a proven track record of teaching, advising, research/scholarship and service, consistent with MUSC-ranked faculty.

Job Description

The PAS Residential Program Director provides academic leadership in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the PAS program.  The Residential Program Director works with and oversees PAS-R faculty and staff to include the PAS Medical Director, Assistant Program Director, Director of Didactic Education, Clinical Coordinator for Operations, Coordinator of Clinical Education and Simulation, Clinical Coordinator of Recruitment, the Director of Admissions, the Student and Alumni Data Coordinator, to ensure the academic excellence of the educational experience of the students.  The Residential Program Director provides leadership to guide faculty and student development as health care providers and professionals.  The Residential Program Director works in close collaboration with the Department Chair, Dean, and other members of college leadership team to promote the vision, mission, values, learning goals, and strategic goals of the PAS Program, department, college, university, and the PA profession.

Reporting Structure:

The Residential Program Director reports to the Chair of the Department of Clinical Sciences, who is responsible for conducting an annual performance evaluation of the Residential Program Director.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the Residential Program Director reporting to the Department Chair.

  • Provide academic leadership for achievement of academic excellence in the residential PAS Program.

  • Ensure the smooth implementation and operation of the residential PAS educational program in conjunction with the program faculty and staff.

  • Oversee the continual evaluation and improvement of the residential PAS curriculum.

  • In conjunction with the Department Chair, Dean and their representatives, plan and implement budgeting to support all program needs.

  • Meet with the residential PAS faculty on a regular basis and serve as a resource for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of curricula.

  • Work with the residential PAS faculty and staff, Department Chair, Dean, and their representatives to ensure ongoing student, faculty, and staff recruitment.

  • Collaborate with the Department Chair, Dean, and their representatives to provide faculty and staff development resources and opportunities.

  • In conjunction with the Department chair, evaluate program faculty and staff on an annual basis.

  • Participate in the establishment and implementation of strategic goals and implementation plans for the program, department, and college.

  • Represent the residential PAS Program within the university, the community, and within the PA professional community, including through the South Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants (SCAPA), the Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA), the National Commission on the Certification of the Physician Assistant (NCCPA), and the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA).

  • Monitor national, regional, and local trends in medical and physician assistant education to maintain program quality.

  • Assure compliance with ARC-PA accreditation requirements and maintain appropriate accreditation and credentialing for the academic program and its faculty.  

Additional Duties:

In alignment with ARC-PA Standard, A2.05 Principal Faculty and the Program Director are tasked with and will actively engage in the following processes:

  • Developing, reviewing, and, as necessary, revising the program’s mission statement, goals, and competencies.

  • Selecting applicants for admission to the PAS program.

  • Providing instruction to students.

  • Assessing student performance.

  • Advising students academically.

  • Ensuring access to remedial instruction.

  • Designing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating the curriculum.

  • Evaluating the overall effectiveness of the program.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • A minimum of 3 years of previous teaching experience, preferably in PA education

  • A minimum of three years of clinical practice experience as a Physician Assistant.

  • Current certification from the National Commission on Certification of PAs (NCCPA)

  • Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies, with the requirement to pursue a doctoral degree upon hiring.

  • Doctoral degree is preferred.
