Job Description

This individual will have limited responsibilities within the Center of Rehabilitation Research in Neurological Conditions. This individual will report to the Associate Dean of Research for the College of Health Professions, Dr. James Krause. This individual should demonstrate the ability to work as part of a team on epidemiological, health services, disability and rehabilitation studies and an interest in being part of a research team focused on assessing the effects of disability on major areas including health and function, community participation, and employment.

RESEARCH DUTIES:

The Research Associate will be responsible for contributing to multiple aspects of a program of outcomes research with neurologic conditions. The individual will both lead and assist with the development of presentations, manuscripts, and reports, and other scholarly activities. Additionally, the individual will contribute to grant development and the development of grant reports, including developing and maintaining a database of team scholarly activities.

Contributes to the conduct of qualitative research from funded projects including the design of the study, analysis of the qualitative data into meaningful themes, mentoring of team members who contribute to this area of research, and the development of materials based on the findings of the research. Participates in all aspects of data analysis, with an emphasis on qualitative data analysis. Participates in interdisciplinary meetings of the project team and research team. Assists in preparation of research proposals, IRB documentation, and/or scientific publications. Serves as a content expert of the current literature in the area of employment and disability specifically, as well as initiating ideas for improvement of the performance of research studies. Accepts suggestions for improvement of methodology.

Contributes to the development of scholarly materials resulting from research conducted by the team, including manuscripts submitted to journals, presentations and national conferences, and the development of materials for stakeholders related to disabilities. This includes development and maintenance of a database with products from scholarly activities, including published manuscripts, conference abstracts and PowerPoint presentations, and other related materials.

Performs research procedures in accordance with an approved human subject protocol, strictly adhering to the study protocol. Establishes and maintains effective, courteous and cooperative relationships and communication with subjects, significant others and co-workers. Actively recruits subjects for participation in research studies.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Individual must be a citizen of the United States or meet federal and state requirements for employment at MUSC. Must have a doctoral degree in a related field.

Preferred Education and Experience: PhD, in a field relevant to the work of the team including psychology, epidemiology, public health, or other healthcare profession. Experience should include research on outcomes of individuals with disabilities, particularly spinal cord injury (SCI), multiple sclerosis (MS), and other neurologic conditions. Some history of publications and presentations is preferred. The candidate must have demonstrated expertise in qualitative methods.

(Frequent) Additional New Requirements: Ability to obtain and maintain a valid drivers license. Computer literacy. Ability to work rotating shifts as required. Ability to work overtime as required. Ability to learn and use new processes, tools and equipment as required.
