Job Description Summary
The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at MUSC has an opening for a motivated and collegial Research Assistant in the laboratory of Dr. David Long, starting on or after December 1, 2024. The lab uses Xenopus egg extracts in combination with biochemistry and cellular approaches to study how chromatin dynamics regulate the interplay between transcription and DNA repair. The lab is interested in understanding how defects in these processes drive genomic instability and cancer progression, with the goal of identifying novel strategies to improve anti-cancer therapy.Entity

Job Description
Job Purpose
To conduct laboratory experiments, prepare manuscripts, operate laboratory equipment, and maintain laboratory supplies in biochemical, molecular, and cellular Biology.
MUSC Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:
A bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or other natural, life or health care science and one year work experience directly related to the assigned research area.
Additional Knowledge, skill, ability preferred:
· A Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related subject is required. · A graduate degree and/or previous research experience in a related field is preferred.
Guidance and Supervision:
· Must be able to perform daily work and troubleshoot routine technical procedures independently.
Job Duties -
· Perform mammalian tissue culture (35%)
- Grow, maintain, expand, and treat mammalian cell lines
- Develop, evaluate, and implement new or modified procedures
· Perform biochemistry and molecular biology procedures (35%)
- Conduct plasmid cloning and protein purification in bacterial expression systems
- Perform in vitro experiments with purified proteins or extracts
· Prepares laboratory records (10%).
- Prepare daily records of experimental procedures and results
- Prepare research summaries describing research accomplishments and future goals
· Maintain laboratory supplies (10%).
- Order supplies and prepare laboratory stocks
· Upon request, performs other tasks requested by faculty that contribute to general laboratory operations (10%).
- Contribute to collaborative projects for colleagues
- Prepare reagents, tools, or other resources for colleagues

(Frequent) Ability to push/ Ability to lift 40 lbs. centrifuge rotors from floor level to height of 40 inches, then down 20 inches into centrifuge drum, unassisted. (Infrequent) Ability to lift 25 lbs. boxes, from floor level to maximum height of 72 inches, unassisted. (Infrequent) Ability to push/pull file boxes from one location to another at floor level. (Frequent) Ability to maneuver heavy equipment on bench tops, 50 lbs. or greater, unassisted. (Frequent) Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements. (Continuous) Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors, normally. (Continuous) Ability to hear and recognize various alarms emitting from work area systems. (Continuous) Ability to hear and/or understand conversations. (Continuous) Ability to work in a darkroom for processing film, etc. (Continuous) Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and annually.
