Job Description Summary

The Tomlinson Laboratory, Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), is seeking a motivated and organized Research Specialist to serve as Lab Manager. The position will provide critical administrative and experimental support for a multidisciplinary team investigating complement-mediated neuroinflammation and neuroregeneration in models of brain injury

Work in the laboratory is centered around the complement system and neuroinflammatory mechanisms. Ongoing projects involve investigating acute and chronic neuroimmune responses occurring after stroke or after different types of traumatic brain injury, including the long-term neurodegenerative sequalae of injury. For example, one project is focused on traumatic brain injury as a risk factor for Alzheimer’s Disease. Another project investigates pathogenic mechanisms of postnatal hemorrhagic stroke and neurodevelopmental consequences. S

The laboratory is also developing novel transgenic animals, and is involved in the development (and commercialization) of novel therapeutic approaches. The laboratory has been a leader in the development of novel targeted complement inhibitory strategies.

Job Description

Duties/Responsibilities

Administrative Management (35%)

·         Manage laboratory budgets, purchasing, and service contracts.

·         Coordinate onboarding and training of new personnel and students.

·         Maintain laboratory records, inventories, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Operational Management (10%)

·         Oversee laboratory organization, equipment maintenance, and supply ordering.

Compliance and Safety Oversight (20%)

·         Ensure compliance with all regulatory and safety requirements such as IACUC, IBC, audits.

Laboratory Research (35%)

·         Assist in projects related to above described work. Perform experimental procedures relevant to projects such as tissue procurement and specimen processing, histological and immune analysis, neurobehavioral analysis

 

MUSC Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:

A bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or other natural, life or health care science directly related to the assigned area of research and two years advanced journel-level work experience in a clinical or research setting.

Preferred Experience and Training Requirements: A BS degree in biology or other natural, life or health care related science. At least six years’ experience working in a research laboratory.
