The Medical University of South Carolina, Department of Medicine is seeking highly motivated applicants to fill their Senior Research Associate position in physiology or molecular biology for the unique interdisciplinary laboratory within the Christie’s Heart and Brain Program. The Program directed by Dr. del Monte, MD, PhD, can provide exposure and training in the newly linked neuro and cardio disciplines. The candidate for the physiology position will work on rodent models of cardiovascular and Alzheimer’s disease, PTSD and traumatic brain injury and human tissue.Entity

Job Description
Job Duties:
20% - Manage animal handling and care for research projects. Must be familiar with the Principles of Labor Animal Care and the and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals published National Institutes of Health. Collaborate with DLAR and Cardiology research faculty and staff on all issues related to animal care for Heart & Brain Institute. Mouse husbandry, tail injection, and echocardiography. Maintenance of rat colonies to ensure quality of life for the animal models including making a smooth and rapid recovery from anesthesia and MI surgery according to the approved IACUC protocol.
20% - Handling of human tissue for research projects related to Alzheimer’s and heart and brain studies. Prepare tissue for biochemistry, molecular biology or isolation of cells for experimental procedures and FACs sorting. This will involve a variety of techniques as directed by Director of Heart & Brain Institute. Ensure that all lab safety procedures are followed.
20% - Participate and lead efforts in molecular biology experiments within the lab. Manage multidisciplinary projects with PI and research staff. This includes establishing and maintaining standardized procedures across labs and data management for PI projects, advising trainees in the labs of collaborating PIs on the design and execution of specific aims, and directing resolution of novel and diverse problems.
15% - Maintain research database and all records for all applicable studies. Upkeep of the current literature for relevant studies. Develop new techniques and methodologies associated with the various aspects of the research study. Meet with the PI to outline the experimental app review data and draw conclusions from the experiments.
15% - Participate and lead in efforts for new manuscripts and grants writing. Collaborate with PI in new manuscript and grant writing for efforts related to Heart & Brain Institute. Ensure that all processes are followed promptly and effectively for new submissions.
10% - Maintain supply inventory/ordering and lab organization. Ensure that all lab supply orders are handled and processed promptly. Work with DOM Procurement staff in placing all orders.
Preferred Experience, Knowledge, and Skills:
He/she will bring strong background in physiology, biology, or other natural, life or health care science. Highly recommended experience in mouse behavioral studies, pathology or/and in-vivo cardiac physiology (Echocardiography, PV loops); in-vitro studies on isolated neuronal cells and/or cardiomyocytes. Candidates for the molecular biology position will bring strong background in protein and nucleic acid biology and biochemistry. All candidates will care for mouse colonies and cultured cells.
Successful candidates will have strong communications skills and a PhD and/or MD in a suitable discipline of biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, physiology, or neuroscience. Candidates must be fluent in English spoken and written.
The position is highly independent and should be able to carry-out multiple tasks at one time. The PI will be readily available and will supervise the candidate.
