Job Description

MUSC is seeking a Sterile Processing Technician to join our team in providing critical care to procedural areas across our healthcare enterprise. Sterile Processing Technicians ensure procedural equipment consistently meets the highest quality and safety standards and is ready for use by all areas across the healthcare enterprise. This position receives and processes incoming supplies and equipment including performing cleaning and sterilizing duties and is an integral part of the daily operation of all units.

Duties include:

  • Maintain adequate inventory for assembly of instruments and equipment
  • Perform and participate in the decontamination and cleaning of all instrumentation received, which include but are not limited to instrumentation and equipment received from all units according to established standards and procedures
  • Prepare case carts and trays for decontamination and load them into washer and/or sterilizer as prescribed procedure
  • Perform the operation of the index washers, cart washers, ultrasonic cleaners as well as manually cleaning instruments and equipment as prescribed by established standards and procedures
  • Inspects all instruments for cleanliness, proper function, and breakage by viewing the instruments before assembly
  • Use appropriate container, wrap or pouch according to the size of the instrument or equipment
  • Sterilizes instruments and surgical trays by following prescribed policies and procedures
  • Know how to run tests on all sterilizers, monitor and document that all parameters have been met
  • Use chemicals in the appropriate fashion taking into consideration the intended use of chemical as well as chemical s function: knowledge of appropriate PPE is also necessary
  • Participates in expediting the OR schedule by assisting the other members of the OR Team in obtaining the instruments/equipment necessary for the procedure in a timely manner Assembles and distributes case carts accurately and in a timely manner
  • Ability to travel between sites as needed, based on departmental needs

Additional Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED certified with either the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CS/SPD) or the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materials Management (IAHCSMM) or in the case of a Certified Surgical Tech (CST), may float to the OR in times of critical needs; advanced knowledge of various types of reusable surgical instrumentation, including power equipment and micro surgical instrumentation.
