Job Description

MUSC, the state's only academic health science center, consists of six colleges and educates and trains more than 3,200 students and approximately 900 residents annually. The University and its health system have collective annual budgets in excess of $5.9 billion and annual research funding over $300 million. In the Charleston area, MUSC operates a 700-bed medical center, a nationally recognized children's hospital, the NCI-designated Hollings Cancer Center, a Level I trauma center, and an Institute of Psychiatry, along with a number of outreach locations.  Through its regional health network, MUSC Health serves patients throughout the state.

The Department of Pharmacology and Immunology is one of 24 basic science and clinical departments within the MUSC College of Medicine. The department works to understand and eliminate disease-causing microbes; and elucidate mechanisms and harness the power of the host immune system to fight against infections, cancer, and other diseases. Faculty and staff concentrate on cancer immunology; immunogenetics; innate immunity; inflammation; autoimmunity; microbiology; and transplant immunology. Reporting directly to the Dean of the College of Medicine, the next chair will be tasked with leading the expansion of the research profile for the department in a manner which aligns with the College of Medicine and MUSC's strengths, which will include making strategic hires, supporting faculty, continuing to develop junior faculty, and encouraging interdisciplinary collaborations.

The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D., M.D., M.D./Ph.D or equivalent degree and have progressive administrative leadership experience in an academic medical center environment, a long history of active and robust extramural research funding and ability to support investigators, and excellent strategic skills and financial acumen.  It is expected that the incoming chair will have academic accomplishments and national recognition for achievement in research pursuits that warrants a tenured appointment with high-impact publications and a strong track record.  This individual should have a demonstrated track record of mentorship and and evidence of having developed others in their academic careers.
