Job Description Summary

This Assistant Director of Shared Resources works directly with the Associate Director (AD) of Shared Resources to provide oversight of Shared Resources. The Assistant AD will work in partnership with the AD SR and the other Cancer Center senior leadership to provide operational management of shared resources and the center’s shared research instrumentation. This role is instrumental in shaping the management, development, and alignment of shared resources with HCC’s research mission and objectives. The Assistant AD serves to advance HCC’s singular mission to eradicate cancer locally, nationally, and globally through innovative research, exceptional patient care, and meaningful collaboration with the communities we serve, ensuring our efforts meet local needs and achieve broader impact.

Job Description

Primary responsibility for the leadership role will include:

  • Strategic Oversight:

    • Collaborate with the AD to provide leadership and oversight of the shared resources to support our Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG)

    • Collaborate with the AD and senior leadership to develop, implement, and evaluate policies, procedures, and strategic plans for shared resources.

    • Provide significant input into the management and direction of shared resource operations to support the research mission of HCC.

    • Work closely with faculty, researchers, and administrative teams to identify evolving research needs and develop solutions to enhance research capabilities.

 

  • Operational Management:

    • Work with senior leadership and HCC finance and administration to ensure the effective and efficient operation of shared resources, including budgeting, resource allocation, and service delivery.

    • Monitor and assess the utilization, performance, and impact of shared resources, recommending improvements and innovations as needed.

    • Work with AD SR and SR Directors to take corrective actions to improve efficiencies, enhance utilization, and mitigate operational issues when necessary.

    • Review core operational processes to reduce redundancies and increase efficiencies.

    • Develop best practices for operational processes across shared resources.

    • Optimize and formalize workflow between shared resources.

 

  • Professional Development & Mentorship:

    • Maintain active extramurally funded research programs; Publishes original reports in high impact peer-reviewed journals; and Provides service to professional societies.

    • Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to shared resource staff.

    • Promote a culture of excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement within shared resource operations.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Advanced degree (MD, DO, PhD) in biomedical sciences.

  • Preferred Experience & Skills:

    • Must hold faculty appointment at MUSC

    • Must be HCC Program member

    • 3-5 years’ experience in a cancer center or academic research environment

    • Ability to manage administrative operations

    • Experience with compliance (e.g., biosafety, regulatory, human subjects’ protection)

    • Strong team management skills

    • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities

    • Ability to analyze and prepare comprehensive reports

    • Knowledge of current trends in research technology and core facility management

    • Demonstrated success in developing and implementing new initiatives in a research setting
